چکیده

We study numerically the linear polarization and extinction of light from background stars in three types of models of elongated molecular clouds by following the development of the Stokes parameters. The clouds are assumed to be of cylindrical shape and penetrated by a helical magnetic field B. In the first two models we study only the relative magnitude of the polarization assuming that the polarization is proportional to B, where primarily μ = 2. Provided there is no background/foreground polarization present we find from the cylindrically symmetric Model I that the angle of polarization has a bimodal character with the polarization being either parallel with or perpendicular to the axis of the filament. For some magnetic-field geometries both angles may exist in one and the same filament. It is concluded that it is not a straightforward task to find the magnetic-field-line pattern from the polarization pattern. If a background/foreground polarization exists or, as in Model II, the filament is not cylindrically symmetric, the bimodal character of the angle of polarization is lost. By means of Model III we have, using semi-empirical methods based on the Davis–Greenstein mechanism, estimated the absolute degree of polarization in the filamentary molecular cloud L204. It is found that the polarization produced by the model is much less than the polarization observed. We therefore conclude that most of the polarization measured in the L204 cloud is not produced in the cloud itself but is constituted by a large-scale background/foreground polarization.

A New Model for Filamentary Molecular Clouds

We develop a theory for filamentary molecular clouds including the effects of ordered magnetic fields, and external pressure. We first derive a new virial equation appropriate for filamentary clouds. By comparing with observational results collected from the literature, we find that the fields are likely helical. Secondly, we construct numerical, MHD models of filamentary clouds that agree with...

Polarized Sub-Millimetre Emission from Filamentary Molecular Clouds

We model the sub-millimetre polarization patterns that are expected for filamentary clouds that are threaded by helical magnetic fields. We previously developed a three parameter model of such clouds (Fiege & Pudritz 2000a), which are described by a concentration parameter C, and two flux to mass ratios Γz and Γφ to specify the mass loading of the poloidal and toroidal field lines respectively....

Helical Fields and Filamentary Molecular Clouds

We study the equilibrium of pressure truncated, filamentary molecular clouds that are threaded by rather general helical magnetic fields. We first derive a new virial equation appropriate for magnetized filamentary clouds, which includes the effects of non-thermal motions and the turbulent pressure of the surrounding ISM. When compared with the data, we find that many filamentary clouds have a ...

Ju n 20 01 Magnetic Fields in Star - Forming Molecular Clouds . II . The Depolarization Effect in the OMC - 3 Filament of Orion A

Polarized 850 μm thermal emission data of the region OMC-3 in the Orion A molecular cloud are presented. These data, taken in 1998 with the SCUBA polarimeter mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, have been re-reduced using improved software. The polarization pattern is not suggestive of a uniform field structure local to OMC-3, nor does the orientation of the vectors align with existing...

Helical Fields and Filamentary Molecular Clouds II - Axisymmetric Stability and Fragmentation

In Paper I (Fiege & Pudritz, 1999), we constructed models of filamentary molecular clouds that are truncated by a realistic external pressure and contain a rather general helical magnetic field. We address the stability of our models to gravitational fragmentation and axisymmetric MHD-driven instabilities. By calculating the dominant modes of axisymmetric instability, we determine the dominant ...
